What To Know When It Comes To Painting Stucco

When it comes to painting stucco , there are many things you must keep in mind. If you follow these tips, you can avoid costly repairs down the road.

Choose The Right Paint

When it comes to painting stucco, you need to choose the right paint. This is because a coat of paint can help protect the surface from moisture, weather, scratches and cracks. The best paint for stucco is a durable and long-lasting exterior acrylic-latex masonry paint. This is a low-VOC product that resists peeling, chipping, fading, rain, snow, dust, dirt, and fluctuating temperature extremes. Another option is elastomeric paint. It can fill in small hairline cracks and works well with thin stucco walls. However, it can also trap moisture inside the wall and cause mold or mildew growth.

Prep The Surface

When it comes to painting stucco, you’ll need to take special care to prep the surface properly. This cement-based siding is highly textured and porous, so it’s important to clean the stucco thoroughly before you begin painting. First, you’ll want to power wash the stucco to remove all dirt and debris. Stucco isn’t as hard to clean as some other types of home exterior surfaces, but it still needs a thorough cleaning. Next, inspect the stucco for peeling paint, rust stains, and efflorescence deposits. These signs indicate water damage and should be repaired before you start painting.

Repairs

Make any necessary repairs before you begin painting by filling smaller cracks with a stucco repair patch material, using at least two applications. The elastomeric patch is safe for the repair job but also protects the stucco from high winds. This product has a little give to it, which is why it works well for this type of repair work. This will be especially important if you are planning to add additional colors. Apply the patch to the area and leave it to dry for a day or two before painting. Larger areas will also need to be patched with a good quality acrylic caulk that is rated for outdoor use. This will give you a much better final look!
